BIOGRAPHY

Jana Millstone’s dream-like imagery propels you into worlds that are sometimes funny, sometimes disquieting or calming, but always thought provoking. Though stylistically different, all her work shares origins in a deeply meditative practice. She believes art-making is a weird mix of play, alchemy, terror, and transcendence.

Jana grew up in a home surrounded by beautiful watercolor art. The daughter of artist Max Glick, who died before she was old enough to know him, she assumed a destiny to continue that legacy. She can’t remember a time when she not making things: drawings, paintings, clothing, jewelry, furniture; designing her own house and doing construction on numerous others. Intrigued by the technology behind the creation of things she exploits it as a way to bring something new to the creative process. Her professional experience gave her invaluable exposure to multiple technologies and processes. With a career designing for prestigious fashion, jewelry and home furnishing companies, she ultimately served as Director of Design Concept at Lenox China.

Born and educated in the New York City area, Jana holds a BFA from Pratt Institute, with additional studies at Parsons School of Design, The Art Student League, and F.I.T. She has exhibited at Brooks Jackson Iolas Gallery NYC, and  Porter Contemporary, as well as Site-Brooklyn.  Her work was featured in a traveling exhibit at the Susquehanna Museum of Art in PA and shown widely throughout the Mid State region, as well as in Florida. She was the winner of the Society of Illustrators’ scholarship  and has since won numerous awards including the state-wide Florida’s Finest first prize.

Along with her husband Jason and a biting parrot named Feather, she became a resident of Sarasota nine years ago, loving the lush tropical scenery and rich creative atmosphere but still missing a little New York City grit.
